Description:

On January 13th, 2024, the University of Chicago Center in Beijing held an invigorating interdisciplinary dialogue between two luminaries from the field of art history and architecture. Under the title of “Permeation: A Dialogue Between an Art Historian and an Architect”, the event showcased the remarkable expertise of two prominent figures: Professor Wu Hung, a renowned art historian critic and Professor at the University of Chicago, and Yung Ho Chang, distinguished Architect, founder of FCJZ, MIT Emeritus Professor.

Drawing inspiration from their respective fields, the two luminary figures engaged in a discourse that revolved around the topic of “permeation”. Professor Wu Hung’s career was marked by his thorough exploration of the concept of “space”. Professor Yung Ho Chang, on the other hand, has carved a niche for himself in the world of architecture with his innovative approach to space and structure. The event provided a precious opportunity for them to have an in-depth dialogue, sparking unique thoughts and inspiration amid their intellectual exchange.

The dialogue was brimming with enlightening and fascinating topics ranging from the intricate relationship between architecture and nature to down-to-earth small talks including why there are so many gates in The Palace Museum. By highlighting the intersections between art history and architectural practice, this event illuminated the multifaceted nature of space and fostered a broader conversation on the importance of interdisciplinary approaches in understanding and reimagining the environments we inhabit at the same time.

The Center welcomed the public to join in and witness the profound conversation by opening up its registration online, providing the participants an invaluable opportunity to engage directly with the two experts. Over 150 audiences joined the event in-person.
