Pandemics: Prevention, Treatment, and Global Health

The devastating pandemics of COVID-19, HIV, and viral hepatitis urge more rigorous discussions on the strategies for effective prevention, treatment, and infection control. The proposed case discussions are intended to offer a platform for researchers and clinicians from the U.S. and China to discuss critical issues such as COVID-19 infection control, vaccination and pathogenesis, etc. The events will be delivered via zoom in multiple sessions in two-week interval over the course of 2 months. We hope to attract experts, researchers, healthcare professionals, medical students and residents to join these sessions and contribute to these vibrant discussions.

Renslow SHERER, MD

Professor of Medicine

Dr. Sherer is the Director of the International AIDS Training Center in the Section of Infectious Diseases and Global Health at the University of Chicago. Since pursuing the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases internationally he has led health worker trainings in China and all over the world. He has implemented micro-credit and health education programs for orphans and families with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa and the Americas, and he has led HIV prevention and stigma reduction programs around the world. He is currently leading a PrEP study in China and a COVID-19 study in Chicago, and he is the Co-Director of a course in Health and Human Rights at the college.

David PITRAK, MD

Professor of Medicine
Chief, Section of Infectious Diseases and Global Health

Dr. Pitrak is highly skilled in the treatment of infectious diseases and has special expertise and experience in the management of immunocompromised patients. This includes stem cell and solid organ transplant recipients, patients with HIV infection and patients with other primary or acquired immune deficiencies. Dr. Pitrak's academic interests include the development of new HIV therapies, rebuilding immune response in HIV patients and investigating the relationship between immune defects and risk for infection in transplantation. He also is the Primary Investigator on a CDC award for expanded HIV testing for disproportionately affected populations in health care settings and enhanced linkage into care in Chicago.

Moira MCNULTY, MD, MS

Assistant Professor of Medicine

Dr. McNulty received her medical degree from Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine and completed her residency and fellowship at the University of Chicago. Dr. McNulty is knowledgeable about sexual and gender minorities and HIV Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).

Stephen SCHRANTZ, MD

Assistant Professor of Medicine

Dr. Schrantz’s work is focused on pediatric to adult transition of care for children with congenital or childhood acquisition of HIV infection. He is also working with colleagues in the Department of Pediatrics to deliver post-partum care to women with HIV and their exposed children.

Ke LIANG, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Liang is the Director of Department of Nosocomial Infection Management and Vice Director of the Department of Infectious Disease at Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University. His major research directions are prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) for HIV, the immunity of tuberculosis and HIV co-infection. Since 2006 till now, Dr. Liang has primarily provided care for HIV positive pregnant women. From 2014 to 2016, he worked in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, University of Illinois at Chicago as a Visiting Scholar. In 2019, he established the first clinic for pregnant women with infectious diseases (HIV, HBV and Syphilis) in Hubei province of China. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, Dr. Liang has devoted his attention to the research on HIV and SARS-CoV-2 co-infection.

Hengning KE, Ph.D

Pprofessor, Zhongnan Hospital, Wuhan University.

Serving as a doctorial mentor, Dr. Ke is currently the Director of the Department of Infectious Diseases in the Second Medical College of Wuhan University. He had many years of clinical experiences in treating infectious diseases. Dr. Ke is now focused on the study of mechanism of emerging infectious diseases and cancer, anti-cancer monoclonal antibody. He received two research awards from National Natural Science Funding Committee.

Xiaobei Chen, Ph.D

Associate Director, Department of Infectious Diseases, Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University

Dr. Chen, Associate Professor of Medicine, currently serves as Associate Director of the Department of Infectious Diseases in Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University. Dr. Chen specializes in nosocomial infection control and diagnosis and treatment of Hepatitis Diseases.

Xuejie YU, Ph.D.

Doctoral student mentor

Dr. Yu is the Dean of the School of Health Sciences at Wuhan University. He also serves as the doctoral mentor. Dr. Yu’s research focuses on epidemics of infectious diseases and emerging infectious diseases: study on transmission routes, vectors and hosts of emerging infectious diseases; the immune mechanism of viruses and bacteria escaping from the host; the development of new vaccines for bacteria and diseases.
