Tomb art is the most deeply rooted ritual art tradition in pre-modern China. Even in the world history of art, few art traditions can match its temporal duration and geographical span. As a synthetic visual system, Chinese tomb art also possesses the richest archaeological information; its components include architecture, objects, painting, sculpture, decoration, burial equipment, calligraphy and the treatment bodies. Supported by an explosion of archaeological materials, the study of ancient Chinese tomb art has seen much development during recent years. The purpose of this series of biannual conferences is to provide an international platform for scholarly communication. The organizers encourage solid, evidential research of important historical phenomena, serious reflection on research method and comparative studies between Chinese tombs and funerary art in other parts of the world. It is hoped that the combination of these three directions will help further develop this field.

墓葬美术是传统中国历时最久、植根最深的一个礼仪美术传统，无论是时间的持续还是地域的伸延都在世界美术史上无出其右。它也是考古信息最为丰富的一个综合性艺术系统，其内涵包括了建筑、器物、绘画、雕塑、装饰、葬具、铭刻书法以及对身体的处理。在大量考古材料的支持下，对中国古代墓葬美术的研究在近年内得到蓬勃开展，在宏观和个案的分析上都作出了不少成绩，同时也出现了对研究和解释方法的强烈兴趣。本次会议的目的是为中外学者提供一个交流和讨论的平台，既鼓励对重要历史性问题的切实的研究和考证，也提倡对于多种研究方法的思考和讨论，以促进这个学术领域的进一步发展。
