China Medical Board Leadership Visits UChicago Beijing Center to Enhance Collaboration

On the afternoon of October 24, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., the University of Chicago Center in Beijing welcomed a seven-member delegation from the China Medical Board (CMB). The visit marked another milestone in the enduring and wide-ranging partnership between UChicago and the CMB—a key ally in advancing global health and medical education. The meeting focused on reviewing past achievements, sharing insights, and exploring new avenues for collaboration and continued institutional support.

The delegation was led by Dr. Roger Glass (MD, PhD), who has served as President of the China Medical Board since April 2023. With a distinguished four-decade career in global health and vaccine research, Dr. Glass previously served as the longest-tenured Director of the Fogarty International Center and Associate Director for International Research at the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) from 2006 to 2023. He was joined by Dr. Barbara J. Stoll (MD), Executive Vice President, former President, and former Trustee of the CMB. Dr. Stoll—the first woman to lead the organization—has dedicated her career to advancing maternal and child health, mental health, and leadership development. Also in attendance was Mr. John Lichten, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the CMB, who joined the organization in 2014 after more than two decades as CFO and Dean for Administration and Finance at the Harvard School of Public Health.

The Beijing Center’s leadership team—Faculty Director Dali Yang, Executive Director Zening Ge, and Associate Director Xia Li—warmly welcomed the delegation. A highlight of the visit was the discussion of the CMB-funded residency exchange program, which enabled 15 UChicago medical students to complete clinical rotations at Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) in April 2025. This initiative exemplifies the meaningful outcomes of the UChicago-CMB partnership and reflects their shared commitment to fostering excellence in global medical education and training.

The visit offered an invaluable opportunity for both sides to reconnect, exchange ideas, and celebrate the success of ongoing collaborations. Looking ahead, the CMB and the University of Chicago expressed strong interest in broadening academic exchanges, deepening joint research, and supporting new initiatives that will strengthen cross-border collaboration and advance health professional education worldwide.
