The UChicago Center in Beijing welcomed 24 University of Chicago undergraduates this week, marking the start of the Fall 2026 Beijing: East Asia, Then and Now Program on September 23.
The quarter ahead offers students a chance to engage deeply with East Asia's history, politics, and culture. This year’s courses are led by faculty from East Asian Languages and Civilizations, the Divinity School, and Cinema and Media Studies.
The Center continues its partnership with Renmin University of China (RUC), which provides student housing and Chinese language instruction. At orientation, Prof. Paola Iovene delivered opening remarks. She was joined by the Vice Dean of RUC's School of Chinese Studies and Cultural Exchange, as well as Chinese language instructors and teaching assistants. The evening closed with a reception - and with it, the first day of what promises to be a meaningful and memorable quarter in Beijing.
