On October 29, the University of Chicago Center in Beijing hosted the 4th UChicago Medicine China Forum, where over sixty attendees gathered for an evening dedicated to advancing cancer treatment and envisioning the future of cancer care. This event brought together leading experts, healthcare professionals, and partners from various fields to hear from the distinguished speakers’ recent discoveries in cancer research and the novel approaches to cancer care.
The forum featured prominent speakers, including Dr. Everett E. Vokes, Physician-in-Chief of the UChicago Medicine and Biological Sciences and James Bae, Director of Business Development for Programs & Emerging Markets International programs at UChicago Medicine. Zening Ge, Executive Director of UChicago Center in Beijing, extended a warm welcome to the speakers and attendees and provided opening remarks. James Bae then introduced the recent updates from UChicago Medicine. Dr. Vokes delivered the keynote address, presenting recent breakthroughs in cancer treatment and sharing insights on the future trajectory of cancer research. His presentation emphasized the university’s integral role in pioneering integrated approaches such as combining chemotherapy with radiation and integrating targeted and immune-based therapies. He also introduced the latest advancements at UChicago Medicine, underscoring the institution’s commitment to transforming cancer care through collaborative research, compassionate patient care, and dedicated community engagement.
A vibrant Q&A session was held following the keynote, encouraging a dynamic exchange on cancer care challenges and emerging trends. The event concluded with a networking dinner, which provided attendees the opportunity to discuss further collaboration between international institutions and local healthcare providers in China. The forum reinforced UChicago Medicine’s mission to eradicate cancer through equitable and innovative practices, solidifying its goal to transform cancer care through groundbreaking research and its commitment to patient-centered solutions.

Everett E. Vokes, MD

Everett Vokes, MD, is the John E. Ultmann Distinguished Service Professor and Chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of Chicago, and physician-in-chief at the University of Chicago Medicine
Dr. Vokes earned his medical degree at the University of Bonn Medical School in Bonn, Germany. He completed his clerkship at St Luke’s Hospital in Sydney, Australia, and an internship at Malteser Hospital in Bonn. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the Ravenswood Hospital Medical Center in Chicago, a senior residency in internal medicine at the University of Southern California-Los Angeles County Hospital, and a fellowship in hematology-oncology at the University of Chicago.
A clinical and translational investigator, Dr. Vokes focuses on the biology and treatment of lung and head and neck cancers and the interaction of chemotherapy and radiation and integration of targeted and immune-based agents. He established the intellectual and clinical basis of national trials investigating concomitant chemoradiotherapy and other approaches to providing multispecialty care and leads clinical and translational investigations both at the university and nationally.
Dr. Vokes is a member of professional organizations including the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Association for Cancer Research, and the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, among others. He is an elected member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation and American Association of Professors and serves on the editorial boards of several oncology journals and is a reviewer for various publications.
To his credit are more than 80 book chapters and 500 papers published in such journals as New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Annals of Oncology, and Journal of Thoracic Oncology, to name a few. Dr. Vokes has presented his work at numerous medical congresses.

James Bae is currently the Director of Business Development for Programs & Emerging Markets at the Office of International Programs, University of Chicago Medicine (UChicago Medicine). His main responsibility includes cultivating and maintaining collaborative projects with healthcare entities and business partners in Asia and other emerging markets; planning and executing international marketing activities; and initiating and managing global consulting projects and education programs of the University of Chicago Medicine.
Before joining UChicago Medicine, James worked as the director of Strategic Business Development at KHIDI USA located in New York City, a government agency under the Ministry of Health of South Korea. His role was to generate business collaboration between the US and Korea in the fields of pharmaceuticals, medical devices, healthcare services, and clinical research and development.
James holds a Master of Health Administration from the University of Iowa and the Project Management Professional certification by Project Management Institute. He also earned Certificates for Integrated Marketing and Essentials of Project Management from the University of Chicago Graham School.
