On June 17, 2025, the University of Chicago Center in Beijing co-hosted the 5th UChicago Medicine China Forum with UChicago Medicine and Chinese Non-Governmental Medical Institution Association (CNMIA), focusing on innovations in gastrointestinal cancer treatment. The event brought together medical professionals, researchers, and industry leaders to discuss cutting-edge advancements in oncology.

Dr. Zening Ge, Executive Director at UChicago Center in Beijing, delivered welcome remarks, followed by an introductory speech from Shan Wang, Deputy Secretary-General and Director of the Member Organization Department at CNMIA. A highlight of the event was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between UChicago Medicine and CNMIA, paving the way for future collaboration between the two institutions.

James Bae, Director of Business Development for Programs & Emerging Markets and International Programs at UChicago Medicine, provided an overview of UChicago Medicine’s Comprehensive Cancer Center and the recent updates on UChicago Medicine. The event also featured a keynote address by Dr. Ryan Merkow, Vice Chair of Quality and Safety in the Department of Surgery at UChicago, Director of Surgical Cancer Quality and Informatics at the UChicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center, who shared cutting-edge advancements in gastrointestinal cancer treatment. To ensure a smooth communication, the Center provided simultaneous interpretation throughout the event.

The forum underscored UChicago Medicine’s commitment to advancing cancer treatment through innovation, education, and international partnerships. This year’s forum not only strengthened ties between UChicago Medicine and Chinese medical institutions but also set the stage for transformative collaborations in gastrointestinal cancer research and care. As a bridge for academic exchange, the Center remains dedicated to fostering impactful dialogues that push the boundaries of knowledge.
