The President of the United States is among the world’s most powerful political leaders. It is important for all of us that the presidential selection process in the U.S. produces qualified candidates. Does it? This talk explores the institutional and structural dynamics of the U.S. presidential selection process, its strengths and its weaknesses, from the decision to run for president through the nomination process and the general election. It examines the process by which, and the reasons why, Donald Trump and Hillary Clintonwon their party’s nominations. And it examines the key strategic decisions made by each of the candidates during the presidential election campaign.
