2024 Summer Residencies for Graduate Student Researchers at the University of Chicago Center in Beijing

The University of Chicago Center in Beijing is pleased to announce applications are now being accepted for the University of Chicago summer residency award for UChicago graduate students with academic interest in China. University of Chicago graduate students planning field or archival studies with a local partner in China in the 2023/2024 academic year are invited to apply for short-term research residencies. The University of Chicago Beijing Center will provide office space and support services, including reliable internet access, to awarded students. Periods of residence may vary from a few weeks to several months. Every graduate student awarded a residency will be issued up to a $3,000 stipend to assist with travel and expenses in mainland China.

Applicants must currently be in the dissertation stage or expected to enter this stage no later than the end of Spring Quarter, 2024. Interested students should write to Xia Li, Academic Events and Projects Manager at the Center, at xial@uchicago.edu with a 500-word summary of the following items:

· Dissertation topic

· Purpose of funding request

· Use of funding

· Name of your principal faculty advisor

· Name of partner institution

· Estimate of the period of time you expect to be working in mainland China

· Budget

You can be most confident about receiving the residency award if you apply before April 10, 2024. The decision will be made by the Faculty Director of the Center and UChicago Global jointly. We expect to award up to four residencies for 2023/2024 academic year.
